We’ve got your weekend: Happy hauntings and more

Delta Chapter, Louisiana Archaeological Society‎Archaeological Investigations of a Former Yellow Fever Hospital.

Wednesday, October 24/The Garden District Book Shop (2727 Prytania Street): Does all this rain make you want to stay inside and read a book, well, what about going outside to hear someone else read a book? What we’re saying is, Rien Fertel will be talking about his newest book (and signing copies), Drive-By Truckers’ Southern Rock Opera. The Drive-By Truckers’ Southern Rock Opera takes listeners on a road trip through the American South, with stops along mean old highways and soul-sucking swamps, iconic recording studios and doomed chartered jets, and even Heaven and Hell. Along the way, the Truckers attempt to untangle the mess that is southern history by exploring the contradictory, dualistic nature of the region. The reading will go from 6:00 PM until 7:30 PM.

Wednesday, October 24/Glitter Box Nola (1109 Royal Street): Yes, October is for haunted times, but it’s also for sexy times because every month is for sexy times in New Orleans. You can join tarot reader and witch Ashley Young in exploring how to worship your body and your sexuality on Wednesday! Sex Magic 101 will examine basic spiritual rituals to bring your everyday understanding of your body and sex. Learn how to incorporate altar making, candle work, crystals and spells into both your solo and partnered sexual practices. This workshop will also touch on the ways of using spirituality in healing sexual trauma, alternative relationships such as polyamory and alternative sex practices such as BDSM. Now that sounds delightful. It all begins at 6:30 PM, tickets will cost you $15-20, and you can find out full details here

Thursday, October 25/ Tulane University, Department of Anthropology, Dinwiddie Hall, Room 201 (Tulane University): In 1874, wealthy cigar merchant Martin del Escobal moved into his new home on Canal Street near the cemeteries. Martin had purchased an entire city block on what was then the edge of town, where he could surround his showcase two-story mansion with ornamental trees and lush gardens. Financial troubles forced Martin to sell the “Escobal Mansion” in 1885. After passing through several additional owners, in January 1893 the mansion was sold to the New Orleans School Board for conversion into a public primary school for the children of the growing Mid-City neighborhood. Now speed up history a bit, add in an epidemic of yellow fever and you have a story that lives beyond the walls of that house. All this and more will be discussed in room 201 of Dinwiddie Hall at 7:00 PM. For full details, check out the event here

Friday, October 26/New Orleans Museum of Art ( 1 Collins Diboll Circle): In celebration of the city of New Orleans’ Tricentennial in 2018, the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA) will present The Orléans Collection, an exhibition of selections from the collection of the city’s namesake, Philippe II, Duke of Orléans (1689-1723). Universally praised during his lifetime, the collection was comprised of some of the most important works in the history of art. On view from October 26, 2018 through January 27, 2019, The Orléans Collection will bring together, for the first time, a selection of masterpieces from institutions such as the National Gallery of London, the J. Paul Getty Museum, and the National Gallery of Scotland to tell the story of the collection’s formation, its reputation, and its impact in early 18th century Paris. And remember, Wednesdays are free at NOMA for locals.

Friday, October 26-Saturday, October 27/Dixon Hall (Tulane University): Are you ready to get your electric music jam on because The Music Science and Technology Area of Tulane University’s Department of Music is holding the 2018 Electric LaTex Festival. The festival consists of three concerts (October 26 and 27). The Electric LaTex Festival presents electronic music and audio-centric intermedia works from students in Louisiana and Texas including those from University of Texas, University of North Texas, Rice University, LSU, and Tulane University. The concerts vary in time, we don’t see a price for tickets (maybe free?), and for a full schedule of the concerts, you can visit their event page here

Friday, October 26/Rosalie Apothecary (3201 Toulouse Street): Rosalie Apothecary is holding a workshop that focuses on herbal smoking blends. This hands-on workshop explores the healing properties of botanicals through medicinal smoking to alleviate ailments such as insomnia, headaches, anxiety, asthma, and many others. During this experience, you’ll get to smell, touch, and discuss a few different herbs as well as how to pair them with each other. As a community, you’ll sample some blends together before making your own personalized blend to take home. Folks will get to make their own blends (about .5oz). Papers and a pipe will be on hand but students are encouraged to bring their own “supplies” as well. We really like those quotes! The cost is on a sliding scale ($20-35), which includes 1/2oz smoking blend. The workshop begins at 7:00 PM, and you can find out full details here
