Bring your own: “Oh Beautiful Storm”

Editor’s Note: Bring Your Own is a nomadic storytelling series that takes place in living rooms, backyards and other intimate spaces within the community. Each month, seven storytellers have eight minutes to respond to a theme. BYO airs on All Things New Orleans and is a biweekly podcast on WWNO.org.

This story was told on June 29th, 2017 at the Music Box Village, and later produced by Laine Kaplan-Levenson. The theme of the evening was “Where I’m From” and was a very special edition of Bring Your Own. At this event, the stories were scored to live music, and things got experimental. Here, Gian Smith tells a story about scrubbing Katrina off his mom’s living room floor, which led to his poem ‘Oh Beautiful Storm.’
