Bring your own: “Oh Beautiful Storm” by Gian Smith

Editor’s Note: Bring Your Own is a nomadic storytelling series that takes place in living rooms, backyards and other intimate spaces within the community. Each month, seven storytellers have 7 minutes to respond to a theme. BYO airs on “All Things New Orleans” and is a biweekly podcast on WWNO.org.

This story revolves around the theme “Where I’m From” and was a very special edition of Bring Your Own. At this event, the stories were scored to live music, and things got experimental. Here, Gian Smith tells a story about scrubbing Katrina off his mom’s living room floor, which led to his poem “Oh Beautiful Storm.”
