The difference in attire of day and night

While no female is the same, the items found in one’s closet are oftentimes very similar to one another. In a women’s closet, there are “staple pieces” that are advised by society that individuals should own. On one side of the closet are pants. There are black skinny jeans, blue skinny jeans, and white jeans. Each pair fitting perfectly around the leg and the rear end. On the other side of the closet are dresses and tops. A black dress will definitely be hanging. In the shirt section, there might be a shirt or two that is off the shoulder that will accentuate the collar bone, a shirt that is tight-fitting that will lay close and reveal the chest area, and lastly a few shirts either for day or night that are flowy yet still end up showcasing the female frame. Last but not least, there will be a drawer filled with exercise clothes where an array of black and patterned leggings will be found.  With this being said, society encourages females to dress in specific clothing for various occasions. Because of that, females are often “sex-switching” to attract the multiple eyes of whomever they might be in front of.

While it may be hard to pinpoint everyday people who engage in sex switching, through the lenses of celebrities’ public photos, it is easy to tell how various celebrities wear drastically different clothing from daytime to nighttime. This is evident all around the world. Whether it is the streets of New York City or a small town in the rural south, daytime, holiday, and nighttime events often call for a different dressing style. A perfect example of how popular sex switching is on well-known Hollywood actress and mother Reece Witherspoon.

Reece Witherspoon was born in New Orleans in the 1970s and has always dressed in a sweet and feminine style in societal terms. Feminine in the sense of her mid-length dresses that range from a variety of colors such as light blue and white, skirts that bellow out and reach just above or below the knee, flouncy tops in a variety of colors and patterns. Interestingly, her attire varies completely from what she wears on an atypical afternoon versus what she wears in front of the spotlights at red carpet events.

Let’s first take Reece Witherspoon’s daytime outfits versus her outfits when she is at an Award Show, television or movie premiere, or another red carpet event. A well-known staple in her closet based on paparazzi photos are flouncy dresses with a belt that cinches at the waist. One example of this is when she wore a patterned dress.

This particular dress had sleeves flow over her shoulders and elbow, ending perfectly just below her elbows, whereas the bottom of the dress lay just past her knees. The blue and purple flowery dress has a v neckline, yet cleavage is fully disguised. Paired with sandals, the outfit is flirty and summery but not revealing in any sexual way. Nathan H from Cosmopolitan discusses how when a woman’s legs are shown it makes an outfit super sexy especially when the skirts accentuate a lady’s butt. Reece’s daytime outfits do not follow this trend.

Another daytime outfit that showcases her everyday style, even more, is a loose-fitting black and white patterned skirt, paired with a simple black t-shirt covered by a loose-fitting denim jacket. Again, the skirt hits right past her knee, showcasing only the bottom part of her leg. Unclear of the exact weather, her shoulders are covered and with the combination of a crew neck t-shirt and a jacket, her collarbone is hidden as well.

Witherspoon’s daytime outfits are on the more modest side of things. Dressing modestly refers to the coverage as well as the drape of the clothing. Reece’s outfits do not attract the eyes towards her rear-end or chest area and are more frequently super flowy. .Reece focuses on accentuating her curvy body by wearing outfits that showcase her hips but not too much as they merely help distinguish which is the top half of her body and the bottom part of her body.

On the contrary are the outfits she wears, knowing that she will be in the spotlight and formally dress. Witherspoon’s nighttime outfits tend to be a lot more revealing than any daytime clothes she ever puts on her body. Her 2015 Met Gala dress she wore is a great example to look at. Witherspoon graces the carpet in a red strapless tight dress with a slit on the side of her leg that stretches to about just a little bit above the halfway mark of her thigh. The dress fits tightly across the upper half of her body, where after the cinched waist, the dress falls straight down to the floor. Unlike her daytime outfit, this formal outfit accentuates her collarbone and more of her legs than she shows typically. Moving over to the 2015 BAFTA Awards (British Academy Film Awards), Witherspoon is spotted wearing one of her most revealing outfits to date. An eggplant-colored dress tight throughout her whole body until it loosely lets out around her ankles. This dress has a plunging neckline bringing attention straight to the cleavage and drawing the eyes to her collarbone as well

Why are these day and night outfits so drastically from one another? Well, it’s our society that tells women to dress a particular way to gain others’ attention. According to an article in Cosmopolitan, there are twelve features to a woman’s body and they are ranked according to which is the most appealing to men and why so. Butt, cleavage, collarbone, eyes, hips, and mouth are in the top 6 of the most attractive parts. These specific parts, merely emphasize that women’s clothing is continuing to reinforce that women’s bodies are meant to be sexualized as clothes most often showcase those specific parts. Noticeably with both formal events, where more people would be noticing the outfits, Witherspoon’s dresses were more form-fitting. No matter the body type, the tighter the outfit the more intriguing it is for the opposite sex, seeing as  Zurain Imam, a writer from the Tribune, did a poll on what men want women to wear, and she writes “Fitted’ was a word generously used — with pencil skirts, tight jeans and body-hugging dresses all favorites. Men like to see that there is a body under there, even if it’s not perfect. It all goes back to playing up one’s assets.”

While this all tends to be considered desirable in society, when will women dress how they truly want? Why are there labels for how a person dresses? This is even more interesting concerning the way Reece Witherspoon dresses as she has her clothing line Draper James that promotes a “feminine, pretty and a southern” way of dressing. The clothes are flouncy, colorful, and have a delicate look to them throughout the website. The pieces utilize patterned and plaid fabrics or silky material enhancing the delicacy.  The outfits slightly accentuate specific body parts like the arms and hips, yet not to the extreme of a tight-fitting dress. If anything was to cinch the waist, the dresses either have a thin ribbon to tie, or the dress is made to bellow in at the waist and then extend. If one is to delve into the website further, there are categories such as date night and casual. Typically, on other websites, sections labeled date night, tight dresses are shown or cropped shirts and tight pants, yet on Draper James, it’s the opposite. The clothing labeled “date night” is very similar to the daytime clothes but if anything, a little less pattern-filled and some darker colored outfits.

If Reece Witherspoon has a clothing company that promotes “feminine, pretty and southern” ways to dress, why does she change the way she dresses when it comes to cameras? There are no clear-cut answers to these questions.
