The poetic city: “It Was One of Those Days”

Editor’s Note: To get us in the mood for Mardi Gras (who are we kidding, we’re all in the mood for Mardi Gras already), we are diving into the sugary, sensual, and silly side that makes this the most wonderful time of the year! This entire month we will be celebrating the food, the culture, the music, and the traditions of Mardi Gras for our “Craving some Carnival” series.

New Orleans is poetic everyday, and it’s especially poetic on Fat Tuesday. To get us ready to live in the emotions, we have Reece Burka’s poem “It Was One of Those Days.”

“It Was One of Those Days”

It was one of those days…

A day of constricted consciousness.
A day when things impinged from all sides.
A day when I couldn’t decide where to start.
A day when anything I did was liable to be wrong.

Until I realized that it was one of those days…

A day to lower the bar.
A day when mere survival would be enough.
A day to celebrate the smallest accomplishment.
A day of no expectations.

That’s when things became interesting.
That’s when it became so much more…
Than one of those days.
