The Poetic City: “Sacred Ground”

Sacred Ground

The twins across the street have been busy.

In a universe governed by the inevitability of probability
They are taking no chances…

At age four they have already grasped the uncertainty of things,
And they are hedging their bets.

With bricks, Mardi Gras beads, plastic pinwheels,
And an array of miniature safety cones in various colors,
They have created a barrier…

A thin, fragile line to separate the small patch of grass in front of their house
From the world of adult utility.

In so doing, the twins have defined their front yard as sacred …

Having served notice to automobiles, unwanted baby sitters,
And other potential intruders to stay away,
The twins are happy with the outcome of their efforts…

And, so far the magic has worked.
