Video: The corner florist

One house entirely makes up the 1600 block on Magazine Street. John Harkins is the owner of this building, filled with flowers and captivating stories.

In 1979, the former high school teacher decided to follow in his father’s foot steps. John Harkins, originally from Jackson, Mississippi, opened his flower shop in New Orleans and eventually moved it to 1601 Magazine Street.

When I first saw the house, I was intrigued by its shapes and colors. Curiously, I walked inside and John welcomed me. He was open to answering my questions and went on to tell me stories about its previous owners and its place in the Crescent City’s history.

Over several decades in New Orleans, John and his shop have seen the business and the city evolve. Today, you can still visit him at 1601 Magazine Street with a hand picked collection of flowers in a unique New Orleanian setting.
