Chefs Move! And the winner is …

John Besh’s Chefs Move! project has named a winner. Syrena Johnson from Liberty’s Kitchen was announced today as the recipient of a culinary scholarship to the French Culinary Institute in New York.

Chefs Move! provides professional culinary training and mentorship to a minority member of the New Orleans community who has the aptitude and predilection to pursue a career in the upper echelons of restaurant kitchen management. Johnson is the program’s first scholarship winner.

It’s a great cause — and it joins another great local cause with the Cafe Reconcile Dinner Series, beginning today.

This new culinary series features seven five-course meals, each cooked by the chef of one of John Besh’s local restaurants. One dinner will take place each month, through December, at Cafe Reconcile, 1631 Oretha Castle Haley Boulevade, in Central City. Cost per dinner is $75, which includes wine or beer; for $500,  you get all seven dinners and a signed copy of Besh’s newest book, “My Family Table.”

First up, at 7 p.m. today, June 21, is Alon Shaya of Domenica. He’ll be followed by chefs from the American Sector (July 19), Restaurant August (Aug. 23), La Provence (brunch Sept. 17), Luke (Oct. 11) and John Besh Steak Dinner (Nov. 8). Besh himself will cook for the crowd at Cafe Reconcile on Dec. 13.
