Alternative Journalism Fall 2021: Upcoming New Orleans Events

If there is one thing to describe New Orleans fun, it is parades! These parades create are the best time to see New Orleans colors come to light through costume, art and more. If this interests you, you will not want to miss this year’s gay Eatser Parade taking place on April 17 in the French Quarter. The annual parade invites the LGBT community to come in their best easter suits, decked out in beads and gems to bring in the Easter Sunday celebration. If you don’t have your vibrant pink suit ready, no problem. Throw on your favorite bunny ears and join the crowd as you dance down the streets of the French Quarter.

Take a trip to New Orleans in early November, and you have come just in time for Oktoberfest. We are bringing German culture to you, celebrating their heritage right here in Louisiana. Hosted by the Deutsches Haus of New Orleans, you get to experience the festival of the year with the main attraction of food. Come hungry and taste the delicious cuisine highlighting sauerbraten (braised marinated roast beef), krautwickel (ground beef stuffing rolled in cabbage, kasseler rippchen (smoked pork shank braised in a citrus sauce), sauerkraut (pickled cabbage), bratwurst sausage and giant Bavarian pretzels. After you have explored the flavors of Germany, you can join in on the traditional folk dancing and musical sounds to continue the celebration.

To all of the film lovers out there, come experience the great works of art you love first hand. The New Orleans Film festival is running November 5-21st, and we invite you to attend the screenings of your choice. There will be in-person screenings throughout the city of New Orleans, including virtual screenings if you prefer to watch from the comfort of your own home. The film festival honors and invites film-creators to show their work in front of our own city. We urge you to support the local community who have created masterpieces of diverse film to create social impact and cultivating discussion.

Holiday season is right around the corner and this is just the activity to welcome in the festivities. Come explore 2.25 miles long of exotic and twinkling lights that will be set up throughout City Park. Bring your hot chocolate and cozy up in the car to drive along the magnificent sights presented by New Orleans City Park. Millions of lights crawling up the oak trees and the picture perfect winter wonderland is something you will not want to miss. Come take in the show from Thanksgiving through New Years. To add to the fun, come explore the Carousel Gardens Amusement Park for endless rides for all ages to enjoy.

If you are an early riser and want a refreshing start to your day, this is the perfect hour to slow down before conquering the day ahead. Join us for an hour yoga session Saturday, November 13 at 8 AM in the Besthoff Sculpture Garden in City Park. The New Orleans Art Museum has partnered with East Jefferson Wellness Center to create a balanced morning of combining art, the outdoors, and relaxation. Come stretch, meditate, and meet a community of your own. All levels of yoga experience are welcome. All we ask is for you to come ready with your yoga mat and dress warm for the crisp morning air!
