As we just finished the last weeks of April which included Every Kid Healthy Week which was April 26-30, and World Health day in early April, I wanted to take some time to bring light to the food industry in New Orleans. This curation of articles is designed to highlight several different areas of New Orleans that have implemented healthy eating, along with the high rates of obesity in New Orleans. According to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Louisiana now has the highest rate of adult obesity in the country. This puts these people at a higher risk of chronic disease and diabetes. The main cause of this issues is that New Orleans does not have enough healthy food options in the area. Every corner of the city has almost at least five fast food options for every one healthy food option.

There were a few restaurants in the uptown district before 2014, where as now there is a growing concern with animal free eating. There is definitely a positive culinary shift in New Orleans but I do not think that it is near as food restriction friendly.

French Quarter restaurants offer several decadent dishes that are true to New Orleans culture, but Eat Fit NOLA has expanded this industry with healthy food options. Eat Fit NOLA is a nonprofit initiative made by Ochsner Health System that works with local restaurants to develop food and drink menu items that meep specific nutritional criteria.
