“The Speed Merchants of Audubon Park”

Little boys and little girls
fly down the asphalt
on scooters and bicycles
cut to size…

Helmets sporting totems
from unicorns to Mad Max
they race ahead of vigilant parents
turning back every so often to make
sure they are being watched.

And I can’t help wondering what it
would have been like to have
experienced such agency at
such a young age when everything
was still possible.
