The poetic city: “Those Tiny Plants”

The pleasure of tiny plants. (Photo by: Reece Burka)

“Those Tiny Plants”

Those tiny plants that grow
against the tarmac
at the edge of the road
don’t realize their bad luck.

With little leaves seeking the sun
and delicate roots searching for water,
they are too busy to consider
the differences between themselves
and their more fortunate brethren.

In moments when everything
is working right, their happiness is
as great as the magnificent oak
or glorious redwood.

And their purpose is no less real
than it is for the rest of us
who reach for the stars
as the stars reach back for us.
