We’ve got your weekend: Black Girl Giggles, pop art, WTUL and Paper Monuments

WTUL’s annual fund-raiser is on, and this cat is feeling the vibes

Thursday, March 1/The ALLways Lounge (2240 St. Claude Ave.): Black Girl Giggles is back with Definitive Figures/Night 2. For those of you who don’t know, Black Girl Giggles is a New Orleans-based collective of African-American comediennes. The evening is curated to spotlight comedy from the Black female perspective – sketch, stand-up, improv and everything in between. Definitive Figures is  a festival of performance and community events created to amplify and explore the femme body in space. You can get your on the giggles on the whole weekend, and to see a list of the shows (as well as times for the events), check out their event page here.

Friday, March 2/Arrow Cafe (628 N. Rampart): Pop art is coming to Rampart Street. Maybe it’s already there? We’re not exactly sure, but we do know that Tess Elaine will be spotlighted and showcased on Friday night for her show at Arrow Cafe. Her work focuses on mixed media, ceramics, and wood, and she layers color and line drawings to create pop art inspired pieces that are then printed and painted. You can check out the art and the drinks and treats at Arrow starting at 7:00 PM. For full information, you can check out the event page here.

Friday, March 2/WTUL (the airwaves): Maybe this weekend you are wanting to take it easy and stay indoors. Well, then you will want to tune into 91.5 fm for the three day/24 hour DJ extravaganza. WTUL has been raising money, which will keep their all-volunteer based radio station on the airwaves. To find out more about WTUL, to donate, and to learn about the fund-raiser, you can check out their website here.

Sunday March 4/The Old Firehouse (720 Mandeville): Are you missing the days of dancing in the great outdoors of the city? Who are we kidding, that dancing never stops. Well, now you can get your knees involved more than you imagined because the Balkan Fais do do is back. The Fais do do happens every 1st Sunday of the month, and you get to learn some traditional steps while dancing to live Balkan music. It all begins at 2:00 PM, and you can find out full details here.

Tuesday, March 6/Cafe Istanbul (2372 St. Claude Ave): Paper Monuments has been printing and speaking out all over the city, and they are presenting ‘Story Boards’ on Tuesday night. Story Boards is a free live visual storytelling and dance party series. It pairs artists with storytellers to create pieces representing the story of a person, place, movement or event that shapes New Orleans. Artists Langston Allston and Henry Lipkis will be there, and you can watch their work in progress as well as  submit your own Public Proposal, create your own Paper Monument, and bring your moves to the dance floor. It all begins at 7:00 PM, and you can find out full details here.
