Thursday, August 10/Orpheum Theater (129 Roosevelt Way): That’s right, summer isn’t over yet, and nothing says summer like spending the entire day not working. An afternoon dedicated to movies sound good? We thought so. It just so happens that the Orpheum Theater’s Summer Film Series will continue this Thursday with The Princess and the Frog at 1:30 PM followed by The Sandlot at 3:30 PM and then ending with Avatar at 7:00 PM. As always, all Orpheum Summer Films are free admission and seated on a first come first served basis. Popcorn and drinks will be available for purchase.

Friday is Tipitina’s Foundation Free Friday Concert Series (say that three times fast). Friday, August 11/Tigermen Den (3113 Royal Street: Is your attention span wavering due to the hot hot air outside? Good thing there are short films to satiate our need for speed! You can join Shotgun Cinema for an evening of new documentary shorts at the Tigermen Den Friday, August 11. These films will take you along the U.S.-Mexico border via satellite imagery; showcase a proud, but devastating moment in Cleveland’s illustrious history; share how one Auschwitz survivor is cementing her story; and witness what happens when people are faced with plunging off of a ten meter diving platform. Saturday, August 12/New Orleans Art Center 3330 St. Claude Ave): “Super-predator” is a term that was penned in 1995 by criminologist and political scientist John Dilulio in an article he wrote entitled “The Coming of the Super-Predator.” Pairing that concept with various political agenda and policies, The New Orleans Art Center will be hosting “Alien vs. Predator.” This is a multidisciplinary exhibition which highlights the foundational and systemic transgressions of the world’s greatest paradoxical superpower. By transposing the term “Super-predator,” the exhibition seeks to stimulate a curiosity within the viewer that forces them to reconsider the legitimacy of the term. Tuesday, August 15/Rubber Library and Flower Bodega (3240 Dauphine Street): The Rubber Flower is a brand new monthly poetry reading. Anyone is welcome and welcome to read. They prefer original work (both prose and poetry), but they will make an exception if you really want to read your favorite author. Alongside the full bookshelves, they also have a table devoted to writer’s own work: poetry books, chapbooks, story books, broadsides, and the like. So if you have literature to sell, bring it along. This is a relaxed, safe space open to the public and is 60 – 90 minutes of open mic (about 6 minutes per reader). Door open at 7:30 PM, readings start around 8:00 PM. BYOBooze / Blankets.
