Wesley’s Top Three: Music in New Orleans

We all know that we live in one of the greatest cities when it comes to live music, and Wesley Hodges has created a weekly Newsletter that you can subscribe to (NOLA Live Music Letter) for news about upcoming concerts and the New Orleans music scene. There’s lots to hear and see this week in the city, and here are Wesley’s top three choices!

Protomartyr at Gasa Gasa (Wednesday, February 24 at Gasa Gasa)
Detroit post-punk rockers Protomartyr anchor a tri-bill with Spray Paint and Black Abba on Wednesday night at Freret Street’s Gasa Gasa. Protomartyr’s latest record The Agent Intellect has enjoyed widespread critical acclaim and if you wanna make it in for this show, your best bet is to buy a ticket in advance, this one could easily sell out.

It’s Friday night at Tipitina’s with a bunch of allstar local players celebrating one of the all-time most beloved hip-hop groups of all-time. With players and MC’s like Derrick Smoker, Mike Dillon, Gravity A and more, this one is all-but-guaranteed to pop off deep into the night. Can you dig it? Of course you can.

Fearless and exploratory, the four abundantly talented and outside-the-box musicians who make up New Orleans’ newest band (Mike Dillon, James Singleton, Johnny Vidacovich and Brian Haas) have played together countless times in various outfits and Nolatet is a brand new sonic machine. The two gigs on Sunday at Snug Harbor will stand as an official album release for their debut album Dogs (out 2/26/16 on Royal Potato Family label). It’s always great to see an early show option on a Sunday and Nolatet should serve up a wildly adventurous and jazzy close to the final weekend in February.  For a taste of Nolatet, check out a video of “Bongo Joe” here.
