Live Oak Wilderness Camp brings summer to the city

Summer camp in September?

That’s pretty much what’s up Saturday for 120 young New Orleanians who spent 10 days this summer at Live Oak Wilderness Camp. The camp’s four summer sessions target 10- to 12-year-olds chosen for leadership qualities by their schools. The idea behind the Saturday sessions is to continue the leadership training with monthly retreats throughout the school year.

Kids from 36 New Orleans schools attended the camp this summer in Wyndhaven, Mississippi, pictured in the photo gallery below. Live Oak Wilderness Camp, a member of the current Propellor Ventures class of social entrepreneurs, was founded by Teach for America alum Jack Carey. His mission is twofold: to give a diverse group of New Orleans kids from public, private, parochial and independent schools the opportunity to connect; and to reframe summer camp not only as a place to have fun, but also to develop leadership skills, self-awareness, empathy and service.

Visit the Live Oak Wilderness camp website or email campers@liveoakcamp.com for information about the 2016 program.
