Indie folk and alternative country was the soundtrack on Wednesday night at Freret Street watering hole Publiq House, as Austin-based, indie pop band Wild Child and New Orleans’ indie rock group Coyotes played to a packed house.
The evening kicked off with a set from the Coyotes — who, for the past few shows, have been playing with a substitute bassist, as the band’s current bass player, Adam, is temporarily off working with the Killers. The temporary bassist, Andrew Jarman (of Vox and the Hound) seems to be a good fit, as even without the band’s core group present, the Coyotes delivered a confident presentation of their latest material, a true testament to the band’s talent. If you missed the Coyotes last week, you can catch the guys again at the Lagniappe stage at Jazz Fest on April 25.
Following the Coyotes, Wild Child lead vocalist and violinist Kelsey Wilson came to the front of the stage, painting stripes on several audience members. The band then dove in to their music, a unique blend of pop music and folk overtones. Joining Wilson as part of Wild Child were Alexander Beggins on lead vocals, baritone and ukulele; Evan Magers on keyboard; Drew Brunetti on drums; Sadie Wolfe on cello; Chris D’Annunzio on bass; and a trumpet/harmonica player.
With two albums under their belt, the latest coming out in 2013, Wild Child’s current mini tour has served the purpose of fleshing out the music that will end up on their next record. The band’s set was well rounded, almost evenly split amongst both of Wild Child’s albums, as well as the new material.
