Beck at the House of Blues: a once-in-two-decades experience

It’s hard to believe, but Beck hasn’t graced New Orleans with his presence in more than 20 years. He last played The Boot, solo, on his Mellow Gold tour in 1994.

It’s a grand thing when you get to a venue and see a sign reading, “An evening with…” — no fill, all Beck. His 25-song set at the House of Blues on Sunday night stretched across practically every one of his releases, with the front of the set emphasizing his latest, Morning Phase. The new material sounded great live and simmered well with the older material.

As the New Orleans stop was such a small-club show, Beck was able to pull out some rarities not normally played at bigger festival shows. The audience was beyond thankful for every track, and didn’t want the evening to end. But alas, it had to, yellow crime scene tape strung across the stage and all.
