We’ve got your weekend: Time to escape

Wednesday, July 26/Paradise Inn (21 Via de Luna Drive, Pensacola) and Tipitina’s (501 Napolean Ave): We usually like to keep the weekend love within the vivacious boundaries of our lovely city (and we do somewhat with this event), but this celebration was so amazing that we are taking you out of town and back home. It’s Christmas. In July. With a concert. Rory Danger and the Danger Dangers will be heading to Pensacola to give you  the gift of three straight nights of pure summeryule bliss. Get away to sunny Pensacola for two nights of rocking around the palm tree, and then jet back to old New Orleans for a final capper at Tipitina’s Free Fridays. Concerts will be Wednesday July 26 and Thursday July 27 at the Paradise Inn in Pensacola, and Friday July 28 at Tip’s. There’s even a mention of Mannheim Steamroller making an appearance. For more details on the event, you can check it out here.

Wednesday, July 26/Flambo Burgers and Bar (1101 Decatur Street): If you are looking to embrace this heat and sweat it out on the dance floor with some latin moves–while also refreshing yourself with food and drink–then you’ve come to the right place. There is a mid-week Cuban dance party with no cover, and it includes Old New Orleans Rum at Flambo. This means your night will be filled with Old New Orleans Rum tasting and a workshop on how to mix Cuban sandwiches, as well as pulled pork tacos, fried yucca, and mojito drink specials. And dancing. Don’t forget about the dancing. All of this begins at  8:00 PM, and you can find out full details here.

Thursday, July 27/Orpheum Theater (129 Roosevelt Way): Orpheum Theater is finishing up their free summer movie series, and they are hitting you with a double dose of fantasy and escapism on Thursday. Their first screening will be Alice in Wonderland, which may be aimed at the kids, but we all know there is a strong adult story hiding beneath those headstrong flowers. That show begins at 2:00, and it will be followed by Singing in the Rain at 7:00 PM. You can fall right down the rabbit hole and slip into saucy song and dance all in one afternoon/evening. All of these screenings are free, open to the public, and information about them can be viewed here.

Friday, July 28/The New Movement (2706 St. Claude Ave): There is nothing like a fine night cap to end a busy work week, and the night cap we are offering comes with comedy. “Night Cap” is a live night time talk show that features stand-up, sketches, games, and a musical guest. The New Movement will be introducing two improv troupes for the night: Super Computer and Splendid. Tickets for “Night Cap” are $7, and you can purchase them as well as find out details about the show here.

Sunday, July 30/Louisiana State Museum (751 Chartres): One Book One New Orleans joins up with the Pirate’s Alley Faulkner Society to bring you an afternoon of poetry at the Cabildo at the Louisiana State Museum. One Book is celebrating their 2017 selection, “Counting Descent” (Clint Smith), and they will also unveil their schedule of community events. “An Afternoon of Poetry” features local poets–Bill Lavender, Melinda Palacio, Gian Smith, and Louisiana Poet Laureate Peter Cooley–reading selections from “Counting Descent.” Complimentary refreshments will be served. The event is free, family-friendly, open to the public, and you can find out more here.
